REMOVAL OF GOLD EXPORT TAX IS EXPECTED
Although no official announcement has yet been made, information has been received by companies operating dredges on the West Coast that the Government intends to remove the export tax of 12s 6d an ounce on gold. ■. • x . , It will probably be some time before this concession becomes effective but the removal of the export tax may assist in bringing “borderline” claims to an economic level. The dredges for a long time have costs mounting, with the price of gold pegged and it is known that representations have been made to the Government for an easing of the taxation burden. Since the end of the war, the companies have already received one major concession, in the removal of the war tax, which amounted to 22s lOd an ounce. This tax was based on the increase in the _ price of gold, which occurred early in the war, out the export tax of 12s 6d an ounce, which is now under consideration, has been levied for many years.
