LONG SERVICE OF CHAIRMAN OF HOSPITAL BOARD

REEFTON, This Day

After 30 years’ service on the Inangahua Hospital Board and over 21 years as chairman, Mr J. B. Auld will not seek re-election at the forthcoming election. High tributes to Mr Auld’s, work over the long period were paid by members at last evening’s meeting, when Mr Auld announced his retirement. In making the announcement, Mr Auld thanked the members for their services and for the co-operation Which they had extended to him over the last three years. Mr Auld also paid tributes ,to the excellent service which the board had received from its executive officers and staff. All of the members joined in extending congratulations to Mr Auld on his record of service in the interests of the board and good wishes for his retirement.

Present at the meeting were Messrs Auld, J. J. Coghlan, W. Clayton, B. Topp, J. McGregor, F. W. Archer, Mrs A. Hardie, Mrs R. Yellowlees, and the acting-secretary (Mr C. A. Belcher). The Department of Health advised that authority had been received from the Minister for the payment to the board of £2OOO, advance on subsidy. . “That was money owing to us, commented the chairman, when the letter was received. The Department also advised that, following upon an improvement in supplies, the allocation of penicillin to the hospital had been increased. It was decided that the medical superintendent, Dr C. A. Heaphy, should attend the conference to be held next month on the compilation of hospital statistics. Messrs Harley and Co., Greymouth, remitted £lO 17s lid, as the net proceeds of the sale of articles from the Merrijigs Hotel (which was bequeathed to the board). One application, that of Mr R. A. J. Robertson, of Waiuta, was received for the position .of porterambulance driver at the hospital, and he was appointed. A copy of the new ambulance drivers’ 1 award was received, showing that the wage was £6 5s for a 40-hour week, with ah additional payment of 12s 6d a week for additional hours of call and 3s 1-Jd an hour for actual driving duties outside the 40 hours. Two tenders were received for the supply of firewood for the hospital, but one was considered unsatisfactory and the other did not comply with the terms of the tender. It was decided to call fresh tenders for 25 cords of silver and brown birch firewood, the successful tenderer to have the right to supply an additional 25 cords. -. • . ' The board’s balance-sheet and statements for the year 1946-47 were returned from the audit department without a “tag.”
