NAURU TRUSTEESHIP APPROVED BY UNITED NATIONS COMMITTEE
NEW YORK, Oct. 22.
The trusteeship committee of the United Nations General Assembly today approved by 41 votes to six the trusteeship agreement for the mandated territory of Nauru. The agreement was submitted by the Governments of Australia, New Zealand and Britain.
The opponents of the agreement included the Soviet, Czechoslovakia, Jugoslavia and Poland. They contended that there was no provision in the text of the agreement for the political education of the inhabitants of Nauru. Mr W. D. Forsyth (Australia) said there was an explicit undertaking in the agreement to protect the rights of the Nauruans to political advancement. The Nauruans already played a considerable part in the administration of the island. The authorities showed every consideration for the welfare of the Nauruans, and provided free, compulsory education, free medicine and free medical treatment.
