UNO COMMITTEE GIVES INDIRECT SUPPORT TO MARSHALL PLAN

NEW YORK, October 14.

Indirectly supporting the principles of the Marshall plan, the United Nations Assembly’s Economic Committee today rejected by 32 votes to six, with seven abstentions, a Polish proposal urging member States not to establish economic machinery outside the United Nations,

Several delegates during the debate interpreted the Polish proposal as condemnation not only of the Marshall plan but of the Pan-American Union and similar organisations. The committee then adopted by 36 votes to two, with eight abstentions, an American amending resolution calling on all member States to carry out all recommendations of the General Assembly on economic and social matters and recommending that the Secretary-General report annually on steps to carry out those recommendations.

The committee adopted unanimously a resolution, moved by Australia and Poland, recommending that the Economic and Social Council annually consider a survey of current world economic conditions and trends and, at other times deemed necessary,, analyse major economic dislocations, study world. trends and supplies, and recommend appropriate measures. - *
