ATTRACTIVE WINS BY TAULOCH AND REGALITY
The two-year-old colts Tauloch. and Regality came through a hard finish in the Welcome Stakes at Ellerslie on Saturday with flying colours, showing courage of a high order. They are good types likely to be further in the limelight as the season progresses. Tauloch had had two races previously and it was probably his more seasoned condition that enabled him to gain the honours from Regality, who was making his first appearance. Tauloch was purchased at the national yearling sales in January by Mr W. Goosman for 1050 guineas. HO has had .three races for a third and two firsts and has earned £1315 in stakes. He is a solidly-built brown by Balloch from Taupiri, by Hunting Song from Flying Foam, by Feramorz from Flagship, by Monoform. In view of his breeding it is not surnrising that Tauloch has shown ability to act well in soft going. Regality is a handsome brown, not quite' as thick-set as Tauloch, but with a little more height and reach. He is a full-brother to the Dunedin Guineas winner, Kartikeya, and was purchased at Trentham in January by Mr A. J. Court for 2100 guineas. He is by Finis, a fine stayer in England, from Kama, by Dark Legend from Karlova, by Clarissimus. The blood is stout and, having made a promising start in his racing career, Regality is expected to develop into a good horse.
Impressive Win Morotai has now won three times this term for £730 in stakes, but she is still eligible for hack races at the Wellington meeting. Her effort at Masterton on Saturday was most impressive.
Capable of Better Precedency, who had won so attractively at Avondale, made an indifferent showing in the big race at Masterton. It might be unwise to accept his form of Saturday on its face value, for he is capable of better deeds. <
Stirpeen Unfit An inquiry was held into the running of Surpeen, who was pulled up in the Hunters’ Steeplechase at Ellerslie on Saturday, the stewards finding that the horse was unfit to race, and expressing displeasure at his being, started. Surpeen had earlier in the term won the Grand National Steeples at Paccarton and had run third in the Lincoln Steeples on the third day.
