CARDINAL GILROY AT AUCKLAND
(PA.) AUCKLAND, October 15. The Archbishop of Sydney (Cardinal Gilroy) was welcomed .to the diocese of Auckland by Bishop Liston and a large gathering of clergy and laity at a solemn liturgical reception in St Patrick’s Cathedral this evening. He has arrived for the consecration oi the Rev. P. McKeefry as titular Archbishop of Defeos and Coadjutor of Wellington, on Sunday. The Cardinal was met at the entrance to the cathedral by Bishop Liston. After blessing the congregation Cardinal Gilroy was enthroned on the bishop’s throne on the Gospel side 01. the .sanctuary. . “It would be ungracious of me it 1 did not fulfil the burning desire in my heart to respond to the very kindly and eloquent welcome extended to me,” said Cardinal Gilroy after he had been welcomed by Bishop Liston. “His Holiness the Pope showed his interest in the church under , the Southern Cross when among the new cardinals he appointed the Archbishop of Sydney. He asked me to convey his blessing to you people -so far away from the centre of Christendom. “I ask you to redouble your prayers on his behalf. He above anyone else desires peace among men and harmony among the nations of the world. There, are many who have sought tfl frustrate the efforts • of the Holy Father and so it is that misery continues, to afflict the human race. “I express satisfaction for the honour and privilege of assisting to bring to the episcopate a priest so revered and loved by all who know him.”
