POOR HARVEST IN BRITAIN: RETURNS WELL BELOW AVER AGE
LONDON, Oct. 10
The British Ministry of Agriculture, in its monthly crop report, estimates that the 1947 harvest will show returns generally below the average for Britain. The yield of wheat is expected to be 15cwt an acre, compared with a 10-year average of 18cwt, and a yield of 19cwt in 1946.
Barley is estimated at 15cwt an acre, compared with a 10-year average of 17cwt. Other figures, on the same basis, are: Oats, 15cwt (compared with 16cwt); rye, lewt (13cwt); fodder peas, 10cwt2 (14cwt); fodder beans, 11 cwt (compared with 13cwt in 1946). The potato yield is estimated at six tons an acre, compared with seven tons over the last 10 years, and 6g tons in 1946. The Ministry attributes the lower yields to the dry period when crops were coming to maturity. .
