(Rec. 10.55 a.m.) MELBOURNE, This Day

Safe breakers in the North Melbourne branch of the National Bank on Saturday night were within half an inch 1 of £45,00'0 when the gas supply for their oxy-acetylene cutters failed. The police' did not discover the attempted safe-blowing until last night. The police said that the thieves had worked for hours cutting their way through the steel doors of the outer strong-room. They then cut through several inch-thick bars of the grille leading to the bank vault. They were more than half-way through the second panel when their gas supply failed.
