MR NASH IS TO REPRESENT N.Z. AT HAVANA CONFERENCE
(P.A.) WELLINGTON, Oct. 10. . It was announced today by the Prime Minister, Mr Fraser, that the New Zealand delegates to the United Nations’ conference on Trade and Employment which is meeting at Havana in, Cuba on November 21, would be led by the Minister of Finance, Mr Nash. ‘ ( Mr Fraser recalled'*that the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations resolved in February of last year, to call this conference for the purpose of. pronioting the worlds wide expansion of production, exchange and consumption of goods, and to this end had appointed a preparatory committee on which New Zealand, together with 17 other nations was represented. This committee. met in London towards the end of 1946, and again, in Geneva, commencing in A.pril of this year. At this latter meeting at which the New Zealand delegation was led by Mr Nash, the committee reached a large measure - of agreement as to the text of the charter to be recommended to the full conference. Certain issues still need to be determined, some of them of particular importance and significance to New Zealand, and it was therefore required that we should be represented next month in such a manner as to secure the adequate recognition of, and provision for oui’ own type of national economy. The Prime Minister remarked that in this latter respect, New Zealand has already taken a prominent part in the discussions and has received the close support of many countries, particularly the smaller ones. Much will depend on the efforts that can be made to bring to a successful conclusion the work that had already been done.
