3500 DISPLACED PERSONS FOR AUSTRALIA

CANBERRA, October 10.

Plans now in operation for the transport and assimilation of nearly 3500 displaced persons who have been selected as migrants to Australia were revealed tonight by the Federal Minister of Immigration (Mr A. A. Calwell). The first party of 860 persons will leave Europe by the United States ship General Heinselman on October 31. Three other ships, each bringing a similar number, will leave Europe on. November 30, January , 26, and ■February 8 respectively. . | Their final Australian port of call • will be Melbourne, and the migrants will spend a month in a camp in Victoria capable of holding up to 1500 persons. After learning more about Australia, they will be allocated to employment. Mr Calwell said that the selected migrants were already receiving tuition in the English language and in. Australian conditions, institutions, and way of life, in a camp near Berlin. All would have accommodation in Australia provided by their employers, the accommodation being generally on the job. Mbst of the migrants /would work in. foundries and factories where manpower was short, and ' others would, be repairers and fettlers on the overland railways. The States would soon be asked to supply details of their requirements of migrants.
