JAPANESE WHALERS TO LEAVE FOR THE ANTARCTIC
TOKIO, October 9.
Japan’s second post-war Antarctic whaling expedition will leave Yokohama soon, according to a report from General MacArthur’s headquarters. The fleet will consist of 27 ships, including two factory ships, 12 catcher boats, 11 salt refrigeration ships, and two oil tankers.
Two observers from General MacArthur’s headquarters will accompany the expedition to ensure compliance with the international whaling convention. The estimated catch is 1700 whales, which should be convertible into 50,000 metric tons of meat.
The Tokio correspondent of Reuters says that shortage of salt may cause delay or even' the abandonment of the expedition, but informed sources say that General MacArthur will not allow this to upset the plans. It is believed that if necessary the American - authorities will make salt available for the whalers.
