Labour Shortages
Clothing manufacturers at their conference in Hanmer Springs this week were told by Mr J. Abel, a member of the immigration advisory council, that they were unlikely to obtain relief of labour shortages for some time. For the time being there were few machinists offering in Britain,.and in any case the policy of the Government would indicate that a high priority would not be given except lor machinists for work in men’s and boys’ clothing factories. “I must deny any suggestion that the Government is scouring England in an endeavour to pick key workers 'Io come to New Zealand,” Mr Abel said. “At this critical period in Britain there is definite co-ordination between the respective Governments, and certain types of workers are not taken.”— (P.A.)
