REDUCTION IN SPORT AND PLEASURE BUS TRAVEL
(P.A.) AUCKLAND, This Day.
The transport of tourists, sports teams and racegoers was under discussion at a review of contract and tourist bus services held by the No. 1 Transport. Licensing Authority, Mr E. J. Phelan. The review was held with the object of making a 10 per cent, saving in retrol.
‘*No trips of more than 50 miles will be allowed without the previous consent of the licensing authority,” said Mr Phelan. “This new scheme is to take effect from November 1 of this year. “However, it will not be necessary to pay a fee for a temporary licence to travel more than 50 miles,” said Mr Phelan. This meant that the issue of such licences would be speeded up, and tiresome delay avoided. “There will have to be a considerable reduction in the number of sports trips,” said Mr Phelan. A reduction in race trips would also be necessary. There was a condition, he said, that if buses for this type of work were cut entirely, it would mean that there would be an increase in the -number of cars -on the roads, if the cuts on bus travel were fully maintained. Mr Phelan, said he felt this would present an overall saving of 10 per cent. “However, unless we can affect a saving, we will have to reintrojduce the coupon system, and, well, all knew, what that means,” he said.
