KEEN INTEREST IN SALE OF KNITTING WOOL
Pound notes were thrust out eagerly by women purchasers when knitting wool in assorted shades and colours was offered at public auction in Wellington this week. It was claimed that £2OOO worth of wool, some of which showed a faulty dye, though it was not water damaged, was on sale.
The auction room was packed. Women bargain-hunters, of course, predominated, but there was also a good representation of the sterner sex. Buyers on behalf of wholesale firms attended: their particular interest was the larger lots. The first wool submitted by auction was navy blue, and it was in keen demand. It was sold in lib lots. “One lb of wool for £l,” declared the auctioneer.
“Pound notes were offered from all parts of the room for the 16 skeins involved in each transaction. The sellers made it clear that the small purchasers would have a chance. The balance of GOlb went in one lot at Is Id per lb. The price fixed by the Price Tribunal, it was explained when bidding began at Is, was Is 7d per skein.
After the navy blue wool was exhausted the auctioneer proceeded with some royal blue. In one lot £3OO worth was disposed of in a few moments.
Wellington housewives, who have been in short supply of wool for some time, showed the keenest interest in the sale, which continued throughoutthe day.
