POLICE RAID ON CHINESE PREMISES
(P.A.) AUCKLAND, October 3. In one of the biggest raids in recent years, 12 detectives and members of the uniform branch of the police went to four Chinese premises in Grey’s avenue this afternoon and interrupted games that were in progress. Thirty-three Chinese later were taken, by van to the Central Police Station, where a special court sitting was held. The police party went in the van to the foot of Grey’s avenue, and from there it walked in groups of three to the Chinese premises. The groups entered the buildings simultaneously. No force was needed. The police simply opened the front doors and walked in.
Chinese gathered around the tables accepted the situation calmly, and there was very little commotion before they were ushered out on to the street and into the waiting van. Four trips were made before the men were all delivered. It is understood that about £BOO was found on the tables in the premises. The Chinese appeared before Justices of the Peace at the police station. Eight were charged with keeping common gaming-houses, and the remainder were charged with being found in common . gaming houses. They were remanded on bail until Monday.
