Following the appeal of the Gov-ernor-General, the Rev. W. T. Blight of Ashburton, acting president of the Methodist Church of New Zealand, requests all ministers and congregations to join in public and private prayer on Sunday next for the welfare of the nation in the present crisis.—(P.A.)
Wheelbarrow Derby The Mayor of Hokitika (Mr A. R. Elcock) has issued a challenge to the County Chairman (Mr M. Wallace) to a wheelbarrow race, Mr Elcock to have Miss Shirley Andrews, town candidate for the “Miss New Zealand” quest as a passenger, and Mr Wallace to have Miss Betty Howat. the country candidate, in his wheelbarrow. The course, subject to Mr Wallace’s approval, will be from the Westland Hotel corner down Weld street to Truman’s corner and the date has been tentatively fixed for tomorrow evening. Mr Elcock has proposed that the race be for a wager of £5, which the candidate who is first home will add to her campaign funds.
