BOXING Eder Defeated In Lightweight Final At Championships

[SPECIAL TO STAR]

1 \ .CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. The New! Zealand Boxing Championships- tournament was concluded at i the King-. Edward Barracks last evening when the finals of all weights were decided. There was a very good. attendance. Winners of the championships are as follows:—

Fly-weight (Bst limit): C. Head (Wanganui). Bantam-weight (Bst 61b): R. Goslin (Wellington). Feather-weight (9st): K. Murfitt (Canterbury). 'Light-weight (9st 91b): S. Stevens (Manawatu). Welter-weight (lOst 71b): N. Stanley (Auckland).. Middle-weight (list . 61b): R. Chooque (Otago). Light-heavy-weight (12st 71b): B. Clarke (Auckland). Heavy-weight (open): K. Skinner (Otago). B. Eder, of Greymouth, after a hard fight in the afternoon in a semi-final, fought S. Stevens, .of Manawatu, in the final of the light-weight class, but was knocked out in the second round. The early, stages : were all in favour of Eder, but Stevens kept up a relentless barrage of punches and had his opponent groggy in the second round. Eder went down for a count of seven and later was counted out. It was a fast, willing bout, with stamina playing a bigger part than scientific boxing. ■ Better Ringeraft C. Head ■ (Wanganui) met a promising youth-in D. Lewis (Waimate) in the fly-weight final. Head showed greater knowledge in ringcraft than Lewis, and his punches were well timed and carried weight. D. -Glozier (Southland) was much too young and too inexperienced to be matched against a hard-hitting fighter in R. Goslin, and the first found was only half-way through when he was sent to the canvas and the referee stopped the fight. One of the highlights of the programme was’provided by K. Murfitt (Canterbury) and W. Pattison (Hawke’s Bay). Pattison made the early pace and had Murfitt down twice in the first round. Early in the second round Murfitt again went down when he.met a vicious right cross, but he made a remarkable recovery and piled up points after a fine display of gameness and was loudly applauded when given the verdict. Murfitt had earlier eliminated V. Tuck (Greymouth) in one of the semi-finals. Greater Stamina

B. Coughlin (Wanganui), who eliminated M. Tuck (Greymouth) in an earlier bout, put up his best 1 fight of the tournament when he was narrowly beaten by the hard-hitting Auckland welter, N. Stanley, who, lacking the science displayed by his opponent, showed greater staying powers. R. Chooque (Otago) proved by far the better boxer in his middle-weight bout with S. Gunn (Pahiatua), and while the latter had an advantage in height and reach, the Otago man scored a clear-cut win. The light-heavy-weight contest between R. Clarke (Auckland) and R. Broughton (Wairarapa) was the most uninteresting bout of the evening. Clarke failed to use his greater height, reach, and weight until the third round. In the final of the heavy-weight class some interest was taken in the appearance of the Otago Ranfurly Shield forward, Kevin Skinner, who was a stone heavier than his opponent, R. Tate (Morrinsville). There was much infighting in the first two rounds, but in the third Skinner clearly established his right to. be named the heavy-weight champion. Awards were made as follows: — John Jameson Belt (most scientific boxer).-—C. Kerr (light-weight, Otago). ~ x. i \ Morgan Cup (welter-weight class). —N. Stanley (Auckland). Cleverley Memorial Belt (middleweight class).—R. Chooque (Otago)., Parisian Cup (light-weight class). —S. Stevens (Manawatu). Earl Stewart Memorial Shield (Association gaining most points).
