BOXING HOGGARTH WINS: HAWES DISQUALIFIED
P.A.) HASTINGS, September 17. There was a sensational ending to
a professional boxing contest between’ Ronnie Hawes, Christchurch, and the New Zealand bantam-weight champion, “Tot” Hoggarth. Greymouth. Hawes was disqualified in the ninth round for going down without being hit and refusing 1o fight. Before this Hoggarth had made all the fight. Hawes slowed him up with, clever footwork and hard counterpunching. Hawes, apparently out of condition, was veiy slow by the ninth -round. After claiming repeatedly for a foul he was turning his back on his opponent and going down on his hands when the referee slopped the fight. Originally scheduled as a bantamweight title contest, the bout was fought catch-weight when Hawes failed to make the weight. Hoggarth weighed Bst 5Mb and Ha we/8s t 9Mb.
