Cobden Lime Issue May Be Settled Today
The fate of the application by Mr G. L. Johnston to obtain commercial quantities of lime from an area at Cobden will probably be decided by the Westland Land Board late this afternoon.
The application came before the board at Hokitika last month, and was adjourned until today “to enable evidence, to be presented by the objectors.” In a telephone interview with the Evening Star at 2 p.m. today, the Commissioner of Crown Lands, Mr P. H. Lawrey, said that the board had not yet dealt with the lime application but it was included on the agenda and would be reached later in the afternoon.
Asked as to the procedure for such applications, the commissioner stated that the matter would be dealt with in committee. “The position is that the Land Board cannot grant the application, but it can refuse it,” added Mr Lawrey. Amplifying this statement, Mr ■ Lawrey said that the application was one under the Public Reserves, Domains and National Parks Act, for the right to mine lime, and an affirmative decision rested with the Minister of Lands, to whom the Land Board, if it so desired, would make a recommendation.
