POLICEMAN’S PROMPT ACTION SAVES LIFE OF TRAIN PASSENGER

OAMARU, Sept. 1

Prompt action by Constable C. H. Price saved the life of a passenger who fell from the InvercargillChristchurch express at the Oamaru railway station this morning. The passenger was Denis Mackie, aged 24, whose home is in Shakespeare road, Christchurch. Mackie, who was standing on the platform of one of the carriages of the express, which had pulled up, apparently lost his balance and fell through an open gateway on to an outer set of rails just as the night goods train was approaching from the north. Constable Price, at the risk of his own life, dived after Mackie, who was struck by a sand pipe in front of the wheels of the engine of the goods, train. The impact spun Mackie round and threw him underneath the first truck. Constable Price caught him by the left hand and pulled him clear/but Mackie’s right hand was caught by the wheels, his fingers being badly crushed. Mackie was taken to the Oamaru Public Hospital, and it was stated this afternoon that his injuries are not serious.
