Britain Makes Modern Equipment For Kitchens
Some day housewives will be able to cook meals about once evory six months, using l an electronic range, and re-heat, them as required in'7s seconds. Experiments are now being carried out in America with such a range which will fit neatly into the impressive pattern of frozen foods and frozen pre-cooked meals which have established themselves in the American way of life. The designers of the range point out that it does not cook food but heats it literally from the inside out. This magic is accomplished by the use of highfrequency power oscillator tubes.
America is not alone in producing new labour-saving devices for the kitchen. British designers and inventors have also been busy and new household appliances are now coin- ' ing on the market. The British housewife is glacing wistfully at the familiar “lor export only” tag on many of the new devices. Now Zealand housewives . would find the new British aluminium electric dining trolley lor keeping food hot alter it is "cooked a useful addition to their homes. The trolley has upper and lower tables, the upper one opening out'as two side flaps to reveal a neat set of four cooking dishes complete with lids. Immediately underneath the dishes is an electric hot plate which runs the length of the trolley. Beneath the hot-plate is a drawer —again running the length of the trolley—which will keep the plates as yell as the food hot for at least five hours. When not in use for cooked meals the “electric hostess” makes an excellent tea trolley. “Heatable Sink” Another device is the “heatable sink.” This comprises aluminium draining boards and a double cupboard surrounding a stainless steel sink which has gas burners fined underneath. The water in the sink can thus be boiled, enabling iriut bottling and washing of clothes to be done very easily. . A new British-made electric cook-
er, known as the thermal cooker, has three ovens maintained at unvarying temperatures for.last, moderate or slow cooking, pasternisation of milk and plate-warming. For the industrious housewife wno makes her own clothes there is a revolution in sewing machines made in aluminium. Run by electncity, this new machine is portable, weighing only about 151 b. It can be used with or without the working table and the end can be raised to allow sleeves to be slipped on and stitched round more easily. Instead ol the usual flywheel there is a metal sphere, while at the touch of a lever with the knee the speeds are instantly controlled. Automatic Laundry Among the latest “automatics” is the automatic home laundry that presoaks, washes, triple-rinses, and damp-dries the clothes, then, cleans itself and switches off, all by automatic switching that eliminates wetting the hands. Another washing machine converts itself into a dishwasher by fitting on an interchangeable tub, constructed for the purpose. Stream-lined cookers that merge into any colour scheme, combining good looks with efficiency, are also reaching the market. All parts are easily detachable, including the oven lining, and are finished with light vitreous enamel, making cleaning a simple matter..
