ASSOCIATION WEST COAST WILL PLAY NELSON AT GREYMOUTH

Association football supporters will be interested in the team chosen by the selector for the Emms Shield match with Nelson at Greymouth on September 6. It was thought when Mr Berry selected his team to play Canterbury B, that he had done a good job, but the game proved that team could be improved in some positions notably goalkeeper, halfback, centre forward, and outside left.

Judging by last year’s game at Nelson, when Nelson, beat West Coast by three goals to two, there is not much between the two provinces. Reports indicate that Nelson has improved since then and West Coast will therefore have to field its best possible eleven in order to regain the shield. Form shown in the Westland competition is the only reliable guide and as Runanga and Blackball both showed consistent form those teams may provide the majority of the representative team.

Chatham Cup Chatham Cup semi-finals provided the chief interest for Association supporters last Saturday. It looks much like Wellington Watersiders and Christchurch Technical being the finalists this year.

Interest In Schools’ Grade There is much interest among the schoolboys in next Saturdays game at Taylorville, when 14 players will be selected to go to Timaru for the schoolboys’ tournament.

Blackball Plans It is understood that the Blackball club is endeavouring to get the Nelson representative team to play Blackball on Sunday September 7. This team is also anxious to meet any Canterbury senior team willing to make the trip in a friendly game at the end of the season.

Postponed Matches The Association football matches, which were postponed last Saturday because of the heavy rain, will be played next Saturday. The fixtures’ will be as follows:— Heslin Cup competition: Greymouth v Runanga at the Recreation ground; Taylorville v Blackball at Taylorville. (Both games 2.45 p.m.). Schoolboys’ trial game at TayloYviUe, 1.20 p.m. Brunner-Runanga combined v Blackball.
