BRUNNERTON Borough Council To Press Again For Water Supply
The Brunner Borough Council at a recent’- meeting discussed at some length the proposals for a domestic water supply for the borough and decided to again approach the Government Department concened with a view, to the proposals being put into effect. There, were- present. _at the- meet-, ing the Mayor (Mr W. Gutberlet), and Councillors Lockington, Quinn, Morgan, Eder, and McNeish. The foreman reported that during the month 92 feet of 20-inch iron piping had been laid in the open drain in Herald street and 80 loads of gravel had been spread on borough roads.
The report of the Health Officer for the past quarter was received as satisfactory. One case of scarlet fever was reported for the period. The district electors’ roll was presented and approved. The roll contains 659 names.
The borough solicitor advised that the lease of the.Wnllsend hall had not yot been completed-' by Westland Talkies and it was resolved that- the company be advised that the lease must be completed within seven days. It was decided Io make the suggested donation lo the Tribute-to-l.ondon appeal. An application for pipes by the North Brunner Co-op, Party for reading, purposes was granted. Noise after Dances The secretary of the Taylorville Domain Board advised that further steps- would be. taken to control and check the excessive noise following dances held in. the pavilion. A letter was received from, the Grey Valley Miners’ Union referring to .the long wait by wet-time and othpr men for transport to their homes, and asking the ‘council’s support for their application to N.Z.R. Road Services for an additional bus leaving Taylorville at 2.15 p.m. to meet the needs of such men.—lt was decided to support the request.
Notice of sale of the Union. Hotel to Wallsend Hotel Limited was received from the vendors’ solicitors.
The foreman was instructed to give early attention to the open drain at the side entrance to the Taylorville school.
The Country Library Service proposals concerning the administration oi' assistance to the public library were explained by Cr McNeish. —it was decided that the proposal offered no definite advantages over the present'arrangements and the council would take no steps to alter the existing arrangements. The plans of the Brunner Old Boys’ Association to celebrate the centenary of the explorer Thomas Brunner were discussed, and the council agreed to donate £lO to the appeal and supply all data possible. Rates Reduced The estimates- for the year ending March 31,-1948, were considered and it was decided to levy a total of 3d in the £ on the capital value of all rateable property within the borough as follows:—A general rate of 2d in the £, a hospital rate of |d in the £, and a street lighting rate of id in the £. This will mean a reduction in rates of id in the £ on the rate collected last year. To improve the Ohau street railway crossing and to give more width for traffic, the clerk was instructed to apply to the Railways Department for permision to instal 68 feet of concrete pipe at the crossing. It was decided to appoint Mr J. D. Lawson to collect the dog. tax for the current year PERSONAL. Mr and Mrs Short, of Dobson, are visiting. Christchurch. Constable Horne has returned from a visit to Christchurch. Mr W. Kerr has returned from Christchurch.
