MELBOURNE, August 11. More than 400 members- of the Ships’ Painters’ and Dockers’ Union stood bareheaded today in sympathy with the relative?, of. the 10 men who were killed in explosions in the steamer Mahia. The meeting unanimously decided to strike a levy of 10s a head on the 650 union members towards a fund for the relatives of the victims. The only painters and dockers working on the Melbourne waterfront today are those standing by the Mahia os a safety measure. .At an investigation into . the disaster, the union secretary (Mr G. Doyle) will try to find out why the mon had to work below hatches which wore alleged to have been closed.

’ The chief officer of the Melbourne Fire Brigade said ioday that if the hatches were not open, it was evidence that the men were unaware of the potential clanger of the material being handled, as they merely had to demand that all escape hatches should be opened, and it would have been done.
