£30 STOLEN FROM WAREHOUSE: EXPLOSIVES USED
(P.A.) CHRISTCHURCH, Aug. 11. Some time during the week-end thieves entered the premises of J. M. Mitchell, Ltd., furniture warehousemen, at the corner of Bath street and Colombo street, forced open the door of the safe with explosives, and stole about £3O. The thieves climbed to the roof of the building, pushed back a glass panel of a large fanlight, and dropped on to a double bed in a showroom. They went downstairs to the office, removed the plate over the keyhole in the centre of the safe door and pushed in an explosive charge. Mattresses and cushions were packed round the safe to deaden the sound of the explosion. When a night watchman was making his rounds just before midnight on Sunday he found the doors of the warehouse open, and he telephoned Mr L. J. Mitchell, manager of the firm.
A quantity of change in a drawer was untouched and £8 in dn envelope was missed by the thieves.
