CRICKET GLOUCESTER BEATEN OUTRIGHT BY LANCASHIRE ELEVEN
LONDON, August 8., Both the leading counties, Middlesex and Gloucestershire, failed to score championship points in the latest series of cricket - matches. Middlesex was x headed on the first innings by Kent in a drawn match, and Gloucestershire was. beaten outright by Lancashire. Scoring, generally was heavy, with several batsmen getting centuries. . . Results were:—
Derby v Essex.—Derbyshire ’ 223 (Townsend 86; Bailey five for 83) and 304 (Elliott 68; Bailey five for 92). Essex 417 (Vigar not out 114, P. Smith 163) and 114 for five wickets. Essex won by five wickets. Hampshire v Surrey.—Hampshire 186 (Rogers 70; Laker, eight for 69) and 394 for four wickets, declared (Rogers 178, McCorkell not out 92). Surrey 136 (Herman five for 47) and 350 (Fishlock 126). Hampshire won by 94 runs. Kent v Middlesex.—Kent 423 for eight wickets, declared (Fagg .184), and 181 for six wickets (Young four for 26). Middlesex 225 (Compton 106; Wright six for 87) and, following. on, 429 for eight wickets, declared (Robertson 140, Edrich 130). The match was drawn. Gloucester v Lancashire.—Gloucestershire 415 (Crapp 131) and .106 (Cranston five for 48). Lancashire 341 (Ikin 62) and 183 for no wickets (Washbrook not out 107, Place not put 73). Lancashire won by 10 wickets.
Yorkshire v Leicester.—Yorkshire 541 for nine wickets, declared (Hutton 137, Smithson 169, Yardley 100). Leicestershire 344 and, following on, 193. Yorkshire won by an innings and 4 runs.
Sussex v Northants.—Sussex 480 for eight wickets, declared (John Langridge 73, Parks 73, Stanton 73, Oakes not out 122) and 40 for one wicket. Northamptonshire 153 (Cornford four for 38) and, following on, 366 (Davis 108). Sussex won by nine wickets. ' ' Somerset v Notts.—Somerset 437 (Gimblett 118, Walford 96) and 103 for one wicket. Nottinghamshire 585 for five wickets, declared (Keeton 113, Simpson 90, Hardstaff not out 200). The match was drawn. Worcester v Glamorgan.—Worcestershire 170 (Muncer five for 17) and 349 (Palmer 124; Davies four for 41). Glamorgan 373 for nine wickets, declared (Davies 177) and 132 (Howorth six for 45). Worcestershire won by 14 runs.
