LATE NEWS Greymouth Players Fail To Survive Golf Semi-Finals
[SPECIAL TO STAR] WESTPORT, This Day. All remaining Greymouth competitors were eliminated in the semi-final games in the West Coast golf championships Vvhich were concluded this morning in fine weather. The finals are being played this afternoon.
The„ only Greymouth competitor to qualify in the men’s senior matches yesterday, H. C. Hill,' failed to survive the semi-finals this morning, while J. Garth, of Greymouth, was defeated at the 19th hole in the semi-final of the men’s intermediate championship. In the women’s junior semi-final, Greymouth’s sole woman survivor, Miss J. Robertson, was defeated by Mrs Friend. The results of this morning’s matches are as follows: — Men’s Matches
Senior (semi-finals): D. L. Woon (Christchurch) beat A. G. Sime (Dunedin) 4 and 3; C. F. Schadick (Westport) beat H. C. Hill (Greymouth) 2 and 1. Intermediate (semi-finals): C. Robertson beat J. Garth (Greymouth) at the 19th hole. D. Ryder beat T. Hill 2 and 1. Junior (semi-finals): A. Bascand (Westport) beat Watts; Hunter beat Farr. Women’s Matches Miss Risk (Westport) beat Mrs Walker (Westport), 1 up; Mrs J. Ward (Christchurch) beat Mrs Woodward (Westport) 5 and 4. Junior (semi-finals): Mrs Morley (Westport) beat Mrs E. Fair (Westport); Mrs Tizard beat Miss J. Robertson (Greymouth). FREIGHTER MAHIA THREATENS TO SINK AT MOORINGS (Rec. 3.5 p.m.) MELBOURNE, This Day. The freighter Mahia, in which 19 men lost their lives on Thursday, caused another scare when she threatened to sink again after refloating. The vessel was sunk at her moorings at Victoria docks to prevent her capsizing after the explosions and fire in the cargo. Pumping-out and refloating was commenced during the week-end, but soon after this had been completed the vessel began sinking again. The holes cut in the vessel’s side after the disaster on Thursday had not been properly sealed and water poured into the burned-out holds. Divers immediately plugged the holes and welded iron plates over .them. The vessel i.s now riding 'on an even keel, slightly down at the stern. She will Jpe- moved to dry dock, but the damage to the keel, deck, refrigeration system, and surface gear will probably take six months to reP!l The Painters’ and Dockers’ Union, of which all the victims were members, is holding stop-work meetings today.

(Rec. 3 p.m.) LONDON, Aug. 10 England’s team to meet South Africa in the filth test match beginning at the Oval on August 16 will be 1 Yardley, Cranston, Hutton, Wright, Washbrook, Compton, Evans, Gladwin, H. J. Butler, J. D. Robertson and R. K. Howorth, with D. Brookes twelfth man. The selectors stated that they had not. chosen Edrich because he is unable to bowl as’ a result of a strained ligament.
