Wharf Union Denial
Union quarters in Wellington dispute the Auckland statement that the settlement of the waterfront dispute here is “generally considered to mark the first serious setback the union has experienced in its militant progress of the past few years. It is stated that the opinions of the national executive were exactly contrary to the claims from Auckland and that the Auckland dispute paid a dividend in that support was received from the Federation of Labour, which represented a “remarkable achievement.” The national executive unanimously endorsed the action of the Auckland branch and held that there was no violation by the union of any agreement with the Government for reasons of its own, and especially because concord had been reached with the Federation of Labour. The resumption of ordinary working had been recommended to Auckland, as the executive knew the union claims would now have outside support.—(P.A.)
