SOVIET SEIZURE OF GERMAN ASSETS: PROTEST BY U.S.
(Rec. 11.30 a.m.) WASHINGTON, July 30
The United States Government in a note to Mr Molotov has protested against the Russian removal of German and Italian assets from Hungary, Bulgaria and Rumania, insisting' that removals should be made only in accordance with the peace treaty provisions. The Note was delivered by the United States Ambassador, General Bedell-Smith, and demanded full information regarding all the “provisional” transfers of assets made before the treaties came into force. The Note insisted that all transfers made before the treaties were effective were only “provisional.” The Note pointed out that Austrian assets could not be seized on the grounds that they were German property, pending Allied agreement on the definition of German assets. The United States view was that the Austrian assets could not be considered German.
The Note declared that the United States took the same view regarding Italian assets.
