MR SEMPLE HITS AT ALLEGATIONS IN UNION PAPER
(P.A.) WELLINGTON, This Day. “This sort of criticism is sheer humbug,” said'the Minister of Works, Mr Semple, today, referring to a statement from the official journal of the Wellington branch of the -New Zealand Carpenters’ and Joiners’ Union, in which it was claimed .luxury buildings had been allowed to proceed at a time of acute housing shortage and that “building workers are fed up to the back teeth.” The Minister said there was absolutely no factual basis for the allegations of promiscuous luxury building, and, as for the allegation that the workers were “fed up to the back teeth,” Mr Semple said: “I believe this to be the empty ranting of a disgruntled union official. I cannot credit that it represents the view- . point of the genuine workers.” The Minister also denied the allegation that authority had been given for luxury jobs to proceed after the building controllers had turned down permits.
