L. J. ELLIS WILL RIDE HOWE IN WINTER CUP
[SPECIAL TO STAR] CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. Howe put in an appearance on the tracks yesterday morning, and was given easy work on the sand. His trainer, W. J. Bromley, stated that the gelding has done well in> the past two weeks, and he dxpects him to make a bold showing in the Winter Cup. L. J. Ellis has accepted the mount on Howe, and asked to be relieved of his engagement for Bridge Acre, who will now be ridden in all her engagements by C. McDonald. Dash o’ Dink has suffered from slow beginnings in his last two races, and is to have a change of rider in the Paparua Handicap, in which he is expected to play an important part. He will be ridden' by A. Stokes.
In spite of the ground being heavily frosted, Silverstreain was schooled over four hurdles today, giving a satisfactory display. Although a comparative novice, this Paper Slipper gelding shows a lot of promise, and is one likely to be in the forefront of the Trial Hurdles field for a substantial part of the journey. Roman Son suffered from tendon trouble after his visit to Trentham, and has been kept going since in the hope that he would be able to race at some stage in the Grand National meeting, but his case has become worse in the last few days, and it has been decided to retire him from racing. He will be given away for use as a hack.
Knight Crusader was responsible for an attractive schooling task over five hurdles at Riccarton late on Tuesday He has not been hurried in bis education as a jumper by his trainer, H .A. Anderton, and gives every promise of soon making good. He will be a light-weight possibility in the Trial Hurdle race. Bracketed horses at Riccarton on Saturday will be:—Enfield Steeplechase: Ballyaggan and Waihopi; Cashmere Plate: Cerisette and Jacquee; Paparua Handicap: Kashmiri and Rival Chase; Bath Slipper and All Quality; Legal Rose and Mr Buzz; Trial Hurdle Race: Kassai and Aldis Lamp; Winter Cup: Longsword and Matador, Blanket and Hakim, Juriste and Sahib; Avonhead Hack Handicap: Fine Night and Blue Hussar; Valiant Prince and Vanity King; Mr Buzz and Polka; Wandering Minstrel and Kinrara and Imasong and Quick Lunch.
