SOUTHLAND APPOINTS HOME REFEREES FOR SHIELD M ATCHES (P.A.) INVERCARGILL, This Day. The Southland Rugby Union last night appointed the following home referees for the forthcoming Ranfurly Shield matches:—R. Ferguson (Otago game), J. North (North Auckland game), and I. H. Mill (Auckland game). The union has accepted a challenge from North Otago, which is the fourth received. A decision to recommend to the council of the New Zealand Rugby Union that it frame a notice of motion for the next annual meeting urging an alteration in rules governing Ranfurly Shield matches, to provide for outside referees was reached at yesterday’s meeting of the management committee in Wellington. This followed a protest from the Otago Union at the decision of the management committee in upholding Southland’s insistence on-appointing a home referee for the Otago-South-land Ranfurly Shield match.
