The partition council on the division of the Indian armed forces announced the first stage of the forces’ reconstruction “on a rough-and-ready communal basis,” as follows:— Royal Indian Navy: India will eventually get four sloops, 12 minesweepers, one corvette, one survey ship, four trawlers, and four harbourdefence motor-launches. Pakistan will get two sloops, two frigates, four minesweepers, two trawlers, and four harbour-defence launches. Indian Army: India will have 15 infantry divisions, 12 armoured corps units, 18 artillery regiments, and 61 engineer units. Pakistan will have eight infantry divisions, six armoured corps units, eight artillery regiments, and 34 engineer units. The announcement stated: “These decisions in no way prejudice the combing out of units on the basis of a voluntary transfer of individuals.” The sub-committees have yet to make recommendations on the reconstruction of the Royal Indian Air J Force.
