Remarkable Run Ended

When the Southland Boys’ High School beat Waitaki in a match between the first fifteens at Invercargill on Wednesday the occasion marked the end of a remarkable run of victories by Waitaki in secondary school Rugby matches. The Waitaki first fifteen had not been beaten since the first game of the 1944 season, when Nelson College won by 18 points to 11 at Nelson. In five seasons of Rugby, from 1943 until this year, the Waitaki first fifteen has won 17 of 23 secondary school matches played, three have been drawn, and three lost. Waitaki teams in these games scored 325 points to their opponents’ 115. Apart from the Nelson College win, Southland has been the only school to beat Waitaki, and on both occasions (1943 and 1947) the scores and the winning margin were the same, 9-8.
