BLAKETOWN SCHOOL CHILDREN HOLD FANCY DRESS BALL

The Blaketown school held its annual fancy dress ball on Thursday, there being a large attendance of parents and friends. The door-tak-ings, almost £lB, exceeded those of previous years. One of the outstanding features of the evening was a collection of coins in aid of the Red Cross drive for food and relief for the people of Britain. Children paraded around the hall, holding outstretched squares of material into which was deposited loose coins. The sum of approximately £7 was realised, and this amount, in conjunction with previous Blaketown collections, brought the children’s donation, to over £l2. The judging of the fancy dr.ess costumes was carried out by Mr and Mrs McNulty, the successful prize winners being the following-:— Primers: Best girl, J. Brown; best boy, Brien .Vieceli; most original, Lynette Dixon. Standards 1,2, and 3; Best girl, Judith Cleghorn; best boy, John Howe; most original, Freddie Schultze. Standards 4,5, and 6: Best girl, Beverly Frazer; best boy, Jim Groom; most original, lan Grant., Old pupils: Best girl, June Efford; best boy, Tom Munden. After .an appropriate address by Mr Darracott, headmaster of the school, the prize-winners ol the various garden plot sections weie awarded their certificates. During the evening items were contributed by Misses Judith, Kay, Zelda, and Maureen Cleghorn, and Leone Hickling (dancing), and Misses L. Hickling and Vai Richards (songs). . A dance for adults was held after 10 p.m„ and at the conclusion of the night’s entertainment, Mr R. r. deslop, chairman of the Blaketown Home and School Association, expressed thanks to all who had contributed towards the success of the function, paying' special tribute to the headmaster and his staff for tic. manner in which they had coacheu the children in their various folk dances, etc. .
