A Farmer’s Protest
[TO THE EDITOTt] Sir, —Mr Greenslade, speaking at a meeting of the Greymouth Chamber of Commerce, said that the farmers were the biggest parasites on the West Coast. On whom is the Greymouth Chamber of Commerce living? The farmer, of course. What does the chamber produce? Nothing. Other- members of the chamber said that the farmers milk -their cows and then go off to work for the Public Works Department. Doesn’t that bring' out two points? First, the farmers are not receiving sufficient reward for their labour and, secondly, the farmers are not afraid of work or hours. Let the members of the Chamber of Commerce roll up their sleeves and produce, the goods. Then they will be able to talk. Yours, etc — W. VALLANCE. Rotomanu, May 1. (Mr Vallance has apparently misunderstood Mr Greenslade, who referred only to “those farmers who have holdings that are too large and those who neglect their properties.” —-Editor, Evening Star.)
