STATE PURCHASES SOUTHLAND MINE
(P.A.) WELLINGTON, This Day. The Minister of Mines, Mr McLagan, announces that the State has purchased the Star mine, which lies between the Wairakei and Morley mines, already owned by the State in the Ohai district. The Minister said that one important advantage of the purchase of the Star mine would be that the three mines could now be worked as a complete area, thus avoiding leaving large blocks of coal on the boundaries. The coal was high-grade domestic and portion of the mine could be worked by the opencast method.
