USEFUL GALLOPS AT RICCARTON

As most of the Riccarton horses engaged at Washdyke on Saturday raced last week, fast work yesterday morning was restricted, and there wore only a few serious gal-? lops. The trial grass was in use. Nightchild and AH Quality covered seven furlongs in 1.31 1-5, the last four in 53. The former finished in front,' and would win good middle races if she would perform up to her track ability. Miss Medley and Falconbridge finished on terms after taking 1.44 1-5 for a mile, the second half in 53. The latter must be dangerous in the Timaru Cup. Legal Rose showed her usual burst of early sgeed by covering the first three furlongs of her half-mile sprint along the back in 36 2-5, and the half took 51. , . Belle Lednrie and Graeme , were companions over a mile in 1.44 2-5, the first half in 51 4-5. Avonbridge covered seven furlongs well in 1.31, the last four in 53 2-5. The Crofter gave a smart display over four hurdles, and promises to develop into a useful jumper.

Great Legend, Wane and Superlative were companions over four hurdles. The first pair shaped very well for novices, while Superlative’s display was satisfactory after being slow at the first fence. Test Pilot was responsible for a brilliant task over five of the steeplechase fences, taking each fence in his stride.

Gulf Stream was among those given easy work. He was very lame on returning, and his prospects of standing up to another preparation do hot look very bright. , Privilege has finished racing and is to retire to the stud. R. Wilson has recommissioned Bridge Acre and Al Sirat, both looking robust after their spell. F. Holmes, who may take Spanish Main to the North Island next month, has had the four-year-oldi gelding Dark Flash, owned by E. Fitzgerald, of Gisborne, placed in his’ charge. Dark Flash, by Kincardine, has had eight races this season for two seconds, three thirds, and three fourths.
