LATE NEWS WHARF FIRES SUBSIDING IN TEXAS CITY

(Rec. 12.45 p.m.) NEW YORK April 17. The furious, waterfront fires in Texas City began to subside this afternoon. The explosions ceased and the end is in sight to the chain of disasters which wrecked the port and left about one-fifth of its population dead or injured. As the flames and smoke from the burning oil storages along the waterfront abated, rescue workers were at last able to aproach the devastated Monsanto chemical plant, where more bodies were recovered. A survey reveals that an area containing 70 blocks, extending in an arc from the waterfront, was hit the hardest. Further back, the damage was legs severe and here a few residents this afternoon were sweeping brokeii glass from the footpaths. A handful of down-town stores were dpen . for business. The water and electricity utilities are being restored, and it is planned to spray the city with D.D.T. Looting is reported to be at a minimum, although valuables are strewn about. Many thousands of dollars in cash and war bonus bonds were scattered on the floor of one shattered bank.
