CABLE BREVITIES Communist Indicted By American Jury
A Federal grand jury has indicted Gerhart Eisler, who is described as the top Communist agent in America on a charge of swearing false statements, when applying for a passport in 1945. The indictment charges Eisler with concealing the fact that he was a member of the Communist Party; with concealing the fact that he used, and was known by various aliases'; and with also concealing the fact that he had .been in the United States within the preceding ten years. This is Eisler’s second indictment. The first one was for contempt of Congress on February 27.— Washington, April 15.
King Christian’s Condition Worse Four physicans examined King Christian today. They stated he was slightly worse. His respiration was more frequent and his temperature higher.—Copenhagen, April 15. Free Press for Italy
A guarantee of a free press has been written into the Italian constitution. The Assembly approved a section which read: “Everyone has a right to express freely his thoughts in speech and writing and any other form of discussion. The press cannot be placed under any authorisation or censorship.”—Rome, April 14.
Simplifying Travel Formalities The leader of the British delegation, .Mr Carew Robinson, was elected chairman of the world conference convened by the United Nations Economic and Social Council for the purpose of simplifying passports and other travel formalities. The Americans intend to use Japan to oust their competitors, particularly Britain, from Asiatic markets, says an article in the Moscow newspaper. the New Times. Britain, i under financial pressure, has had to | agree not to sell Indian cotton in ! Japan. The effects of increased imi ports of American cotton into Japan {may be that cheap Japanese textiles : will compete with British textiles in 'foreign markets.—Moscow, April 15. ■ Check on Wine Sales j The British Government proposes to change the Pure Food and Drugs 'Act to compel all retailers of wines and spirits to give details of the contents on the labels of all goods offered for sale. This is designed to {check the sale of bogus or inferior {wines and spirits at exorbitant prices.
