Manawatu Swept By Gale: Property Damage Reported

PALMERSTON N., Tihs Day. ; Palmerston North paid . for its immunity from the last North Island cyclone when the city wnsdashed last night by a gale, which reached a top velocity of 69 miles an. hour, and an average of 54 miles an hour for four hours. Theye was widespread damage to property. Trees were uprooted, roofs blown off, and power lines broken down. Several areas this morning were still without power and communication. Air services; to-day were not affected. • Heavy rain accompanied the gale. A fall of one inch was recorded. At Mangahao 1.59 inches fell at No. 1 dam and 80 points at the power house. The level of the lake before the rain was 130!) feet and after the rain 1345 feet. FERRY STEAMERS. RUN INTO STRONG SOUTHERLY STORM (P.A.) WELLINGTON, This Day. The steamers on the Lyttelton and Nelson services had rough journeys to. and from ' Wellington last night. The Hinernoa ran head on into a southerly storm for the third time in her short service, but weathered it well and was only 25 minutes late in reaching Lyttelton. The Rangatira made good time on the run northward, but a strong wind made three attempts to berth necessary. The Nelson steamer Matangi, lightly laden and with few passengers, made heavy weather of the Strait crossing, and did not reach Queen’s wharf, Wellington, until 11150 a.m., nearly six hours late.
