SHIPS LEFT IDLE: CASUAL LABOURERS REFUSED WORK
SYDNEY, April 14. Through a shortage of 2300 watersiders was reported on the Sydney waterfront today, 30 men from the reserve pool of wharf labourers were sent home without jobs. These men are akin to “seagulls” in New Zealand and are not allowed to accept employment until all. members of the Watersiders’ Union have been engaged. b The reason given for the failure to employ them was that the union hatchmen or winchmen were available to complete the gangs. '' Five overseas ships were left idle today and 27 were short of either day or night labour. . -v
