FEMALE TABOUR IN ENGLISH RACING STABLES The acute shortage of labour in England so far as stable hands are concerned, has made trainers exploit another field to relieve the situation and they have fortunately found it in the ranks of equestriennes. Several trainers have made arrangements for qualified young women to enter their establishments to take up riding-out work and general stable duties as a career. There is every indication that largescale employment of women will soon be common. Girls of good family, with high school education, and some who have had initial experience in the hunting stables and riding academies, form the recruits to racing. Former members of the land army with farm experience have been accepted and have already proved their value. In reply to a question, one of the girls said: “I got this job at Newmarket through the Ministry of Labour’s Scottish head office in Edinburgh. They said there, as if it meant something, that we should be known as racing stable ladies. We all think now that’s the wrong title. We’re stable .girls and no'more—until one of us gets a ride in the Derby.” The “stable girl” is not unknown at Tiiccarton, Wingatui, and elsewhere in New . Zealand. The equestrienne has usually light hands and is generally kind and considerate to animals in her charge.
