BRITISH LABOUR SPLIT OVER CONSCRIPTION
LONDON, March 20, “A Labour .motion for the rejection of the National Service Bill was lahled last night, and is said to have the backing of 60 members of the parly.” says the Parliamentary correspondent .of The Times. “The sponsors of the motion' believe that by the time the secondreading debate takes place it will have the support of at least 80 Labour members.” The correspondent added that the Government supporters who oppose the bill include both a small pacifist group which objects to conscription on conscientious grounds and the larger number who have been continuously pressing for the reduction of the strength of the forces. .They held that Britain cannot afford to maintain more than 1,000,000 men under arms in peace time.
