The Minister of Defence (Mr F. Jones) and the official party, which includes the Chief of the General Staff (Major-General N. W. McD. Weir), arrived at Iwakuni airfield, Japan, at 8 o’clock on Sunday even- , ing.— (P.A.) Mr and Mrs R. E. Heffernan left this morning on return to Christchurch. , Messrs C. D. Pedersen (district officer) and T. W. Exton (district vehicles inspector) of the Transport Department, Christchurch, will, arrive at Greymouth on an official visit toS Mr K. O’Brien, who will leave shortly for Wellington, and Mr A. Osborn, who has been appointed postmaster at Waiuta, were bidden farewell by members of the Brunner Rugby League Club, the former being presented with a wallet and Mr Osborn with a writing set. The Bishop of Melanesia (the Rt. "Rev. W. H. Baddeley) who has been appointed Suffragan Bishop of Whitby, England, arrived at Auckland by flying boat from Sydney yesterday. He will return to Australia next Tuesday, and leave for England on April I.— (P-A.) The appointment of Mr A. R. Tarr, of the District Traffic Manager’s office, Wellington, to succeed Mr J. S. Roscoe as general secretary of the New Zealand Railway Officers’ Institute, was announced yesterday. Mr Roscoe has been forced to retire because of continued ill-health. (P.A.) Mr E. D. Andrews, former New Zealand singles champion and New Zealand Davis Cup representative, has accepted the appointment of nonplaying captain-manager of the 1947 New Zealand Davis Cup team, which will leave Auckland on March 27 for England.-—(P.A.) ■ Guests at the Albion Hotel include Messrs K.
