U.S. Golf Rule Changes
~ The United States Golf Association has simplified and streamlined its rules so that even the rawest novice can understand them. It has cut the number of rules from 61 to 21, and reduced the index of definitions from 900 to 73. There are few major rule changes. One, however, eliminates the penalty stroke for hitting the ball out of bounds. The penalty now is a loss of distance only.—New York, March 16. Christchurch Cricket High School Old Boys’ narrow win over East Christchurch on Saturday gave them the required five points to win the Canterbury Cricket Association’s senior competition for the season. The final points in the competition are:—Old Boys’ 48, Lancaster Park 47, East Christchurch 41, West Christchurch 36. St Albans 35, Svdenham 35, Old Collegians 34, Riccarton 31, West Christchurch Old Boys 20, Technical Old Boys 3. Appeal for Needy Children A plan under which the United Nations this year would call on workers, farmers, employers, and organisations in every country to give one day’s wages or the 'equivalent to help to ‘supply food, medicine, and clothing to 30,000,000' needy children was submitted by the Secretary-General (Mr Trygve Lie) to the Economic and Social Council today. It is estimated that between 700,000,000 and 900,000,000 dollars could be collected by this means. The entire proceeds would be given to the International Children’s Emergency Fund to finance a long-term programme of aid to children in the war-ravaged countries of Europe and the Far East. The collection would not affect the fund’s immediate campaign to raise 450,000,000 dollars from the governments of the United Nations to help to feed 20,000,000 European . children this year.—-New York, March 15.
