Fine Performances At St Patrick's Sports

With the best of West Coast axemen in action in the chopping events and leading Canterbury and Nelson athletes and cyclists competing against a large number of local riders and runners, the St. Patrick’s Sports conducted at Victoria Park on Saturday afternoon, was probably the most successful meeting of its kind held at Greyrnouth for years. In keeping with the high standard of competition, the attendance was large.

Winner of the main chop was Jack Mason, of Runanga, who had his first success for the season after chopping consistently well. Mason was placed in the rhain St. Patrick’s chop two years ago. In the final on Saturday Mason cut well to finish his log just ahead of W. Mumm, the well-known Buller and South Island Rugby forward. Good Double First prize of <£2o in. the St Patrick’s Wheel Race went to the New Zealand champion and record holder, R. H. Knight, of Christchurch, who outsprinted the field home after catching up on the front bunch after only a mile had been covered. Knight’s co-marker, A. J. Tomson, was third, with Nicholson, also of Christchurch, second. First Greymouth riders home were M. Bergamini and H. Pratt/ A -protest lodged after the race on account of Knight and Tomson being given new handisaps of 20 yards instead of the scratch mark on which they were originally placed, was withdrawn. Knight completed a successful day by winning the South Island championship two-mile event from Tomson and Nicholson. H. Pratt, the Greymouth rider, had every chance in the straight, but was outsprinted. He finished fourth. With fields of 36 riders contesting most of the races, which were held on a dry, rutted track with clouds of dust obscuring part of the field at times, the accidents that occurred were not totally unexpected. There were two crashes, four riders altogether coming down. The three Greymouth riders involved, E. Patterson, A. Bergamini, and K. Lalor, though thrown heavily, were not seriously injured, but Patterson received a number of cuts as well as a severe shaking. Fast Times The athletic programme was of a high standard. The scratch 100 yards was won by the junior champion, D. Dephoff, from K. Warren (Hokitika) and K. Perrin (Greymouth). Only inches separated the three, and the time, 10 l-ssec, equalled the New Zealand and West Coast junior record, though the peifoimance will not be recognised as all conditions were not observed. P. Conaghan won the St. Patrick’s Day 100yds Handicap for the second time in three years when he scored oft 4. ! ,yds in the fast time of lOsec. K. Perrin (l|yds) and W. Bell, of Hokitika, were second equal only a fraction behind the winner. Bell won the 220yds handicap. Canterbury champion, J. Oakley, won the scratch half-mile from J. Fitzgerald, while the mile was.won by °I White, another Canterbury iunior, with M. Eder and Oakley next. The Greymouth runner, G. Watson, fell over a marking-nag when making a bid in the stiaight. Four women’s marching teams gave an attractive display, Blaketown winning for the second successive occasion with 203! from Combined Business Girls (IJ/ : > points) and Owens (191!). Taylorville, which also competed, secured 189 points. ~T TT Blaketown’s leader, Miss V. Henderson, won the leadership prize with 47 points from Miss P. Crooks (Owens), 44J, and Miss J.
