CROQUET Play In Finals Commenced
Championship Doubles Started The West Coast croquet championships were continued at the Makura green this morning, play in the sihgles reaching the semi-final stage. The doubles chaimpionship was commenced. One of the outstanding matches of the day was that between Mrs. Jones, of Westport, who continued oh. her winning way in the singles championships to defeat Mrs. Gunn, of Greymouth, after a particularly close game, by 26 to 23. Three out of the five sections played in the handicap singles have been completed and the winners were all Westport candidates, Mesdames McHerron, Nettle and Jones. These matches were played on the Cobden and Runanga greens. Results of play yesterday afternoon and this morning are as follows:— Championship Singles. First life, second round.—Mrs. Jones (Westport) defeated Mrs. O’Neill (Christchurch) 26-12. Third round.—Mrs. Nottle (Westport) defeated Mrs. McCracken (Christchurch) 26-12. Mrs. Hooper won by default from Mrs. McLauchlan. Mrs. C. Moss (Christchurch) defeated Mrs. Green (Westport) 21-11. Second life, second round. —Mrs. Gunn (Greymouth) defeated Mrs. Robertson (Westport) 26-20. Third round.—Mrs. Jones (Westport) defeated Mrs. Gunn IGreymouth) 26-23. Mrs. Rhodes (Dunedin) defeated Mrs. Gandell (Christ- 1 church) 26-8. Championship Doubles. Mesdames Nicholls (Christchurch) and Rhodes (Dunedin) defeated Mesdames Greener and Brown (Westport), 26-5. Mesdames Robertson and Jones (Westport) defeated Mesdames I. Patterson and Skelton (Reefton), 26-18.
Mesdames Stockdale aiid Me* Cracken (Christchurch) defeated Mesdames Hooper and Hannan (Greymouth), 26-11. Mesdames Gunn and McLatichlan (Greymouth) defeated Mesdames Fielding and Gore-Porter (Reefton), by default.
