ATTACK ON RAF. CAMP
JEWISH TERRORISTS IN PALESTINE COMMENT ONJBEVIN’S SPEECH LONDON, Feb. 20. In Palestine last night Jewish terrorists attacked a Royal Air Force camp. The terrorists Used mortar fire and small arms. There were no casualties. A correspondent says the reason for the attack was that the camp was one of the bases used by aircraft on the look-out for illegal immigrant ships. The Jerusalem correspondent of The Times says the Jewish press takes two main lines in its comment on Mr. BOvin's speech in the House of Commons. It asks why, if Britain /has no right to introduce a fundamental change in the mandate or partition of the country, he did not say so sooner, and asserts that the only reason for the mandate being unworkable Were the vacillations and imperialistic tendencies of British policy. Belabouring Britain.
No commentator, Jew or Arab, the correspondent says, admits publicly that there is an irreconcilable conflict between the minimum demands of the two communities, and after the short interval in Which the problem was seen on a broader plane, the vocal part of the population had returned to its old pursuit of belabouring Britain and her representatives, in this case Mr. Bevin. This is, of course, largely an expression of the pique and dismay the people feel when they contemplate the passing of another year without a settlement being reached and despondency on this score is general. Itgun Zvai Leumi, broadcasting a denunciation of the British proposal to submit the Palestine problem to the United Nations, said: “Our aim is a Jewish state on both sides of the river Jordan. We will continue dur fight against the enemy Unabated and will never submit to negotiation. We Will gather friends in the United Nations to support our case, particularly from among states Who seek to embarrass our enemy, Britain.” Dr. Izzat Tannous, general secretary of the new Palestine Arab “National Treasury,” is launching a national drive for raising £220,000. He said: “We are now at war, in which no quarter will be asked and none given. It will be a battle of life and death and woe to the vanquished.”
Woman Arrested.
The correspondent of The Times in Jerusalem reports that a woman member of Irgun ZVai Leumi for whom the police have long been searching was arrested yesterday in the military pass office, where passes are issued for all the security zones.
The woman already possessed a temporary pass for one zone. The policeman on duty suspected her, but astutely only asked her to report again at the pass office at a specified time to have it renewed. When she came waiting police experts recognised her immediately and arrested her.
