FIRST ROYAL VISIT
DUCHESS OF GLOUCESTER AT PITCAIRN ISLAND /'Rec. 9.50 a.m.) PITCAIRN ISLAND, Feb. 20. The first Royal visit was made to Pitcairn Island to-day when the Duchess of Gloucester received 100 islanders on board the Rangitiki The occasion was made the first public holiday in the history of the island. . , Four boatloads, comprising almost the entire population of adults on the island, went on board the liner. They presented the Duchess and the Princes with native handkerchiefs and toys. . , ~ . An informal gathering was held in the main saloon. Some of the islanders were shy, but others were almost embarrassing in the heartiness of their handshakes. . The liner made a three-hour visit in perfect weather. The islanders expect the Rimutaka to call at the island on Sunday en route to New Zealand.
